10 Tips for Living a Balanced Life

The definition of a "balanced life" differs from person to person, but it is something that most, if not all of us desire.  To me, living a balanced life means managing my time in such a way that I will be able to do all of the things that are important to me--balancing my social relationships, my personal care and development, community service, career development, and family relationships, .  In order for us to achieve the most balance in our lives, certain guidelines must be followed.

  1. Know who you are.  Know your values and understand your foundation of beliefs.  To honor your true self, you must know yourself well.
  2. Define your priorities.  Understand what’s important to you, identify your values, and communicate your needs.
  3. Simplify your life.  The more activities and the more possessions you have to manage, the more unbalanced your life will feel. Too much of anything can lead to stress, so avoid over committing yourself. There is nothing worse than rushing from one activity to the next, with no time for *you*.
  4. Devote your full attention to just one priority at a time.  Align your time and your mind so that you're thinking about work when you're at work and you're spending quality time with the family when you're with them.
  5. Monitor your activities.  For every activity that you participate in—everything that you do—ask yourself if those activities fit into your values and priorities.  Balance occurs when who you are, what you want to do in life, and what you value are aligned with your thoughts, activities and choices.
  6. Leverage the time and ability of others—rely on your partner, family members, or friends to help do something while you focus on other top priorities.
  7. Know how to be content.  Count your blessings and realize the completeness of your life.  Part of the reason many people feel unbalanced is that they are always wanting and working for more.  Know when you have enough…and be happy and satisfied with what you have.
  8. Live for today.  Don’t worry about the future and don’t dwell on the past.  Do what you can—the best you can—for today.
  9. Monitor your attitude.  Developing and maintaining a positive attitude makes life more pleasant and more successful.
  10. Schedule time for fun.  Fun and relaxation are an essential part of living a well-balanced life.  If you believe that the most important thing is to be happy in life (not when I'm a millionaire or when I retire but right now) then you can always make time.
We all have been given the same amount of hours in a day, week, and year. What we choose to do with our time is the key difference between those who are in control of our lives and those who are not...between those who are balanced and who are not.
