Maximizing Sleep

Don't Sleep You Life Away

Forget what everybody has told you: ”We need plenty of sleep”, “Get at least eight  hours of sleep”, “Buy a comfortable bed because you’ll be spending a third of your life on it”. We don’t need too much sleep. Sleep keeps you away from living your life. Sleep is not comfortable. The purpose of sleep is to re-energize your body. Sleep the necessary hours required for your mind and body to recoup then get your ass up and out. Sleep is not supposed to be comfortable, it is supposed to be efficient.

Improve the Quality of Your Sleep

Now I don't want to discount the importance of sleep. Having enough high quality sleep is important to having an active and energetic life. The key word here is quality. The higher the quality your sleep, the fewer hours you need to rejuvenate your mind and body.

Night Time Ritual

One of the most important things you can do in order to increase the quality of your sleep is to create a night time ritual. This prepares your mind and body to get ready for sleep. Twenty minutes before bedtime dim all the lights in your home. If you don't have lights that dim, turn off all unneeded lights and just leave on a distant light just bright enough to be alert of your surroundings.

After you have set your sleep time ambiance, you can begin getting ready for bed. I recommend having night time clothes that are very comfortable.  Hygiene is also extremely important as well. I don't care how many times you shower in the morning and throughout the day. Always shower, brush yor teeth, and comb your hair before you go to sleep. You want to feel like  a million bucks when you go to sleep. Clean sleep is quality sleep.


I recommend having night time clothes that are very comfortable. Like wearing a suit to work, it is important to dress for the occasion. Your entire night time wardrobe should be a similar fabric and fit. Familiarity and habit is extremely important in order to create an environment that is conducive to sleep.

The Bed

You probably make your bed every night but you should remake it every night before you are ready to climb in your bed. Acknowledging the importance of the bed prior to going to sleep will enable your mind to acknowledge the importance of this slumber.

A small firm mattress is all you need for sleep. Get rid of all the pillows. You don’t need them. A cozy body is a lazy body. A small blanket or towel makes the perfect pillow. The bedroom should not be a luxury. If you make your bed too comfortable, relaxing, and cozy, you will never want to get up. By having a sleeping environment that is just comfortable enough, you are maximizing the amount of time you have to enjoy life and minimizing the time you are unconscious and lifeless.
